Statement: Calgary Chamber welcomes opening of Major Projects Office in Calgary and the appointment of Dawn Farrell as CEO

This statement is attributable to Deborah Yedlin, President & CEO at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce

“The Calgary Chamber of Commerce welcomes the opening of the Major Projects Office (MPO) in Calgary and the appointment of Dawn Farrell as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The MPO represents a critical step toward advancing economic growth by streamlining regulatory processes, reducing duplication, accelerating project timelines and attracting investment capital – all of which are essential factors for building major infrastructure projects.

“Dawn is the right person at the right time to lead the MPO. She brings valuable financial, economic and strategic perspectives informed by her leadership of Trans Mountain as President and CEO and as former President and CEO of TransAlta. Notably, Farrell led the successful completion of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project in 2024 and the transition away from coal-fired power while at TransAlta. Dawn is known for her ability to build relationships – in the private and public sectors and with Indigenous communities. Her appointment reflects the federal government’s commitment to bring proven leadership and experience to projects that are central to Canada’s economic future.

“Furthermore, the decision to headquarter the MPO in Calgary signals the federal government’s recognition of Alberta’s pivotal role in growing the national economy. It reflects an understanding of the province’s competitive advantage and investment potential in its energy resources – including oil, natural gas-supporting growth in LNG and petrochemical projects, critical minerals and agriculture.

“We look forward to the announcement of the first tranche of nation-building projects in the coming weeks and remain committed to working with Dawn, the MPO and the federal government to advance projects that strengthen Canada’s economy and create long-term opportunities for Canadian businesses across all sectors.”
