“We welcome the federal government’s decision to eliminate all tariffs on U.S. goods covered under CUSMA, effective September 1. We are encouraged this step has been taken towards reinitiating trade negotiations, particularly given reciprocal tariffs have been a point of contention in Canada’s trade relationship with the United States for the last several months. Further, this decision is consistent with Canada’s commitment to free trade under CUSMA and represents a positive step ahead of renegotiations in 2026.
“With businesses absorbing tariff costs to retain U.S. customers, the removal of these levies will ease financial strain on Canadian companies during a time of economic uncertainty and inflationary pressure – conditions that small businesses have felt even more acutely. We encourage the government to continue supporting sectors still affected by targeted levies, including autos, steel and aluminum, and to underscore the essential role Canadian exports play in supporting U.S. prosperity. As trade discussions resume, we expect to see the federal government maintain this measured, strategic approach that prioritizes the competitiveness of Canadian businesses.”
