“The Calgary Chamber of Commerce is disappointed by the 35 per cent tariff levy announced on Friday by the United States. While Canada will maintain the lowest average tariff rate among U.S. trading partners due to goods covered under CUSMA, we remain concerned about the broader economic impact of sector specific tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and softwood lumber.
“It’s heartening to see Canadians championing a resilient economy — from widespread public backing of a strong federal approach, to buying Canadian and supporting our local businesses. At the same time, many businesses remain concerned that retaliatory measures will increase operational and consumer costs and contribute to inflationary pressures. Thus, they are encouraged by the prospect of the removal of some existing tariffs to help hard-hit Canadian industries, alleviating strain in an already challenging economic environment. We encourage the government to continue its measured, balanced approach, weighing the need to support Canadian interests while also minimizing potential long-term impacts on businesses – particularly small enterprises that are more susceptible to cost pressures.
“As negotiations with the U.S. continue, it is vital that the federal and provincial governments continue to make the case of the importance of Canadian goods contributing to U.S. prosperity, underscoring Canada as a dependable, long-term trading partner. We remain optimistic that a thoughtful, mutually beneficial agreement will be reached – one that provides greater predictability and confidence for businesses in both countries and lays the foundation for CUSMA negotiations ahead of 2026.
“Looking ahead, we hope to see continued momentum on shared economic priorities where progress has already been made, including trade diversification, improving interprovincial trade and supporting transformative and nation-building projects. The Calgary Chamber remains committed to working in partnership with government and industry to advance these priorities and foster long-term economic growth and stability.”
