Statement: Calgary Chamber applauds federal government’s commitment to springboard Canadian business

This statement is attributable to Ruhee Ismail-Teja, Vice President, Policy & External Affairs at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce

“The Calgary Chamber of Commerce welcomes the federal government’s announcement of a new plan to mitigate the economic impact of tariffs and leverage this critical moment to strengthen Canadian industries for the long term. We are particularly pleased to see a focus on small business, including through improved access to capital through liquidity relief and the Regional Tariff Response Initiative. We are also encouraged by the targeted support for canola farmers, who have been disproportionately affected by recent trade policies.

“Several measures announced recognize there is opportunity in crisis, and will be critical for ensuring Canada’s economy is not only protected but well positioned to thrive long-term. Prioritizing local procurement through a ‘Buy Canadian’ policy, reskilling and supporting workers, and supporting agriculture including biofuel production are all opportunities to harness Canada’s potential and create a more competitive economy that leverages our natural resources, skilled workforce and the strength of Canadian companies.

“Looking ahead, we advise the federal government to develop a comprehensive industrial policy and continue to prioritize trade diversification – particularly given recent declines in exports to markets outside the U.S. – and take further steps to reduce costs, boost productivity and strengthen the global competitiveness of Canadian businesses.”
