Statement: Business community encouraged by national collaboration; eager for clarity on Canada-U.S. trade

This statement is attributable to Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce

“The Calgary Chamber is encouraged by this week’s First Ministers’ meeting, which demonstrated a clear commitment by both federal and provincial governments to work together to accelerate Canada’s economic growth opportunities. We are particularly pleased to see a commitment to the Major Projects office being established by Labour Day, as well as consensus that despite a sense of urgency, a trade deal with the U.S. must be in Canada’s best interests and could take longer than anticipated.

“Although business uncertainty persists and companies continue to deal with cost pressures, business sentiment across Canada has stabilized, and in some cases, shown moderate signs of improvement. While eliminating all U.S. tariffs must remain the goal, we urge all levels of governments to take proactive steps to support businesses, prioritizing stability and certainty.

“We are pleased to see ongoing collaboration between the Prime Minister and Premiers to define Canada’s economic future, navigate ongoing internal and external trade dynamics, and address the ongoing economic uncertainty facing businesses across the country. With an ambitious agenda ahead, we are committed to working alongside federal, provincial and Indigenous governments to build resilient local economies that contribute to shared Canadian prosperity.”
