“We welcome the passing of Bill C-5, the One Canadian Economy Act, officially receiving Royal Assent. This is a pivotal move to strengthen trade, build infrastructure and unlock economic opportunity across the country. In a time of global volatility, it is essential that Canada reinforces internal economic ties and accelerates investment in nation-building projects. Getting this legislation over the finish line in a swift and collaborative way is a strong signal that the federal government is acting — not just talking — to support business certainty and growth.
“As a next step, regulatory reform must extend beyond those projects designated as nationally significant. For smaller, local infrastructure projects — particularly in rural and Indigenous communities — clearer timelines and more predictable approvals are equally vital. These projects may be modest in scale but have an outsized impact on economic development and community well-being. This includes other policies that hinder development and investment, such as the emissions cap, Competition Act amendments, Impact Assessment Act amendments and others.
“Moving forward, it will be essential to ensure the regulatory process provides clarity on consultation, respecting Indigenous rights and enabling proponents to move forward with confidence. The balance between streamlining approvals and upholding principles of meaningful consultation, environmental stewardship and democratic oversight must remain a priority.
“The Calgary Chamber will continue to work in partnership with governments and our business community to ensure infrastructure and trade-enabling projects move forward efficiently, responsibly and with shared benefit — helping build a more resilient, inclusive and competitive Canadian economy.”
