“We are deeply concerned by the recent imposition of a 75.8 per cent anti-dumping levy on Canadian canola seed, adding to the existing 100 per cent tariffs on canola oil and meal. These new tariffs coincide with the start of harvest season when producers – primarily based in Alberta and Saskatchewan – are selling their crops to market. Amid an already challenging trade environment, the introduction of additional tariffs will significantly impact the canola sector, which contributes $44 billion annually to Canada’s economy.
“We strongly encourage the federal government to immediately provide financial support to Canadian canola farmers and to stabilize economic relations with China. Given China is Canada’s second-largest export market for canola products, totalling $4.9 billion in 2024, restoring a stable relationship is essential. As the government continues its efforts to diversify trade beyond the United States, it is vital to ensure that no single industry is treated as a bargaining chip for the benefit of another. Each sector across Canada supports businesses, jobs and livelihoods and must be given equal priority.”
