Calgary Chamber congratulates Mr. Carney on becoming Canada’s next Prime Minister

March 9, 2025, Calgary, AB – On behalf of the Calgary business community, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce congratulates Mr. Mark Carney on becoming Canada’s next Prime Minister, ushering a new chapter in Canada’s history. New leadership comes with the opportunity to set a renewed direction for Canada, one that emphasizes economic growth and productivity – defining a future that secures our country’s prosperity at a time of rapid change and uncertainty.

“As you take office, we encourage you to prioritize a competitive, prosperous and productive Canadian economy – one that benefits all sectors, all regions, and all Canadians,” says Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “Canada is at a critical moment in time, facing tectonic changes in the global economy, shifting geopolitical dynamics and a both evolving and uncertain relationship with our largest trading partner.”

Our Calgary business community has come together to develop recommendations on charting a path to a stronger economy, 82 of which are shared in our recent federal platform, Inflection Point. As you begin to define the vision for Canada’s economy, we encourage you to prioritize the following, to remove barriers to growth, enhance productivity and position Canada for long-term success:

  • Competitiveness: Reduce regulatory impediments that stall investment and impede business growth and prioritize infrastructure investments to unlock capital, increase productivity and allow for increased exports of Canada’s resources.
  • Trade: Strengthen internal supply chains, address interprovincial trade barriers, increase trade with existing partners while opening new markets to support opportunities for Canadian businesses.
  • Entrepreneurship: Support access to capital for small and minority-owned businesses, improving tax measures and removing barriers to funding streams.
  • Talent and labour: Ensure we have the labour force needed for a growing economy, including upskilling, credentialing and thoughtful immigration policies.
  • Community well-being: Spur further investments in community infrastructure, address safety concerns, and accelerate housing affordability.

At the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, we know we are better together, and in this spirit, we encourage collaboration between government, business, and civil society to harness opportunities that will protect jobs, attract investment, ensure Canada remains a global leader and build a more resilient, prosperous future for all Canadians.
