Supporting Entrepreneurs

Canada has 100,000 fewer entrepreneurs today than two decades ago, even as our population has grown. At the same time, rising costs and growing regulatory complexity are making it harder for businesses to invest in the tools that drive productivity: technology, automation and innovation. 

This trend is contributing to slower growth, reduced competitiveness and fewer new businesses entering the market. As large players consolidate in key sectors, competition declines — and with it, the incentive to innovate. That means fewer choices for Canadians, higher costs and limited wage growth. 

There is growing consensus that governments must support entrepreneurship, reduce barriers to innovation and foster an environment where small businesses can grow and compete.  

There is growing consensus that governments must support entrepreneurship, reduce barriers to innovation and foster an environment where small businesses can grow and compete. This includes addressing the disproportionate hurdles faced by women, Indigenous peoples and other underrepresented entrepreneurs, including access to capital, capacity and other systemic barriers. 

The Calgary Chamber continues to advocate for a business environment that encourages innovation, strengthens competition and fuels long-term prosperity.
