Building Communities

Strengthening our communities to support well-being

A strong economy starts with strong communities. When people thrive, businesses do too — and that means ensuring affordable housing, reliable infrastructure and equitable access to opportunity across Canada.

Why it matters

Canadians’ quality of life depends on the strength of its communities. But as our population grows at record rates, the foundations that support daily life are under pressure. Housing has become less affordable, infrastructure is aging and access to essential services, such as broadband, is uneven — particularly in rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

The consequences are clear: a lack of affordable housing and accessible transit makes it harder to attract and retain talent. Limited digital connectivity holds back rural economic development. And when cost of living rises, consumer spending declines. Housing challenges are increasingly linked to concerns around safety and social stability, particularly in high-growth urban centres. Transit, too, plays a critical role — connecting people to employment, essential services, local businesses and their communities.

However, encouraging investments in Calgary — like the BMO Centre, Arts Commons, the Glenbow Museum and expanded transit — show what’s possible when we invest in community vibrancy. The private sector will be central to these solutions too, accelerating housing construction, strengthening infrastructure and expanding digital access.

The Calgary Chamber continues to advocate for policies that support thriving communities — because strong communities are the foundation of a strong economy.
