  • Brief description:  Supports Alberta’s small- and medium-sized enterprises, industry associations, Indigenous organizations, and economic development organizations that promote Alberta exports through international travel to formal outbound trade events. 
  • Eligibility: Alberta-based SMEs, non-profits, and Indigenous organizations. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Participation in international trade events, market entry activities.

  • Brief description: Helps businesses demonstrate the commercial viability of their products. Up to $150,000 to enter a partnership with a partner to conduct a pilot. 
  • Eligibility: Alberta-based SMEs with fewer than 500 employees and less than $50 million in annual gross revenue. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Product pilot or demonstration with a strategic partner. 
  • Due date: Ongoing
  • Brief description: Supports new, for-profit, privately-owned businesses in Alberta with up to $1,500 in non-refundable funding to help turn great ideas into successful ventures. 
  • Eligibility: Businesses less than 1 year old, with no more than $10,000 in annual revenue, and completed business registration. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Any business-related expenses, including purchasing equipment, marketing efforts, managing cash flow, and covering payroll.

  • Brief description: Supports collaborations between Campus Alberta institutions and small businesses to address technical challenges and enhance innovation.
  • Eligibility: Campus Alberta institutions and small businesses in Alberta.
  • Types of projects accepted: Projects that focus on research and development, technical problem-solving, and innovation.
  • Due date: Ongoing
  • Brief description: Makes it easier for small businesses to access loans from financial institutions.
  • Eligibility: Most start-ups and existing for-profit, not-for-profit and charitable small businesses in Canada with gross revenues of $10 million or less.
  • Types of projects accepted: Working capital costs, intellectual property, renovations, and equipment.

  • Brief description: Diverse loan financing and mentorship programs to support startups and entrepreneurs.  
  • Eligibility: Canadian citizens or permanent residents aspiring entrepreneurs, ages 18-39, currently living in Canada. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Various initiatives to support entrepreneurs through financing and mentorship.

  • Brief description: Supports Alberta tech companies with up to $105,000 in funding to cover the salary cost of an Associate over a one-year term.  
  • Eligibility: Alberta-based SMEs with fewer than 500 full-time employees and less than $50,000,000 in annual gross revenue. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Research and development projects.

  • Brief description: Supports with up to $120,000 to help cover the salary of employees to promote the commercialization of your business. 
  • Type of grant: Non-repayable grant. 
  • Eligibility: Alberta-based SMEs.

  • Brief description: Provides interest-free, repayable funding to help businesses accelerate their growth and enhance productivity. 
  • Eligibility: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Western Canada that are incorporated, have been in operation for at least two years, and have a strong potential for growth. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Projects that focus on business expansion, technology adoption, and productivity improvements. 
  • Due date: Ongoing
  • Brief description: Provides up to $15 million over 2 years for creating inclusive spaces. 
  • Eligibility: Existing non-profit facilities, private facilities and family day home agencies. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Accessible renovations, equipment, and materials. 
  • Due date: June 13, 2025 
  • Brief description: Offers two Alberta-based businesses $25,000 each to propel innovation and power growth 
  • Eligibility: Alberta businessesthat, at the time of entry, qualify aseligible for-profit small businesses(under 99 employees) 
  • Types of projects accepted: The Big Future Innovation Grant is awarded to small businesses who have demonstrated innovation. The grant funds can be used in any way that furthers business innovation.  
  • Due date: 2025 intake has not been announced.

If you are interested in working with students from a specific post-secondary institution in Calgary, reach out to: 

  • Brief description:  Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) provides wage subsidies to support employers to create quality summer work experiences for youth aged 15 to 30 years.
  • Eligibility: Employers from not-for-profit organizations and the public sector, as well as private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees.
  • Due date: November – December the year prior
  • Brief description: The award provides either $10,000 or $15,000 per intern to allow them to undertake a four-month internship project with a partner organization in Canada. Interns will work with their academic supervisor to co-design a project with their partner organization to work on the organization’s innovation activities, helping them improve their products, processes, or services.
  • Eligibility: For-profit corporations (must receive more than 50% of their funds from non-government sources) and eligible not-for-profit corporations, municipalities, and hospitals in Canada.
  • Due date: Ongoing
  • Brief description: This funding offsets the costs associated with hiring and training students in meaningful work experiences by providing reimbursements of up to $7000. This Government of Canada funding is administered by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) through 17 Funding Delivery Partners.

  • Brief description:  Provides funding to create employment opportunities for students and recent graduates in Alberta through 2024
  • Eligibility: Businesses that have current hiring needs and are in tech-related fields within applied health, agriculture, life sciences, advanced materials, aerospace, nature resources recovery, and/or research and development in AI / ML. 
  • Due date: Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. 

Indigenous-led businesses

Here is a list of grant opportunities available to businesses that contribute to Indigenous communities or are owned by Indigenous peoples.

  • Brief description: Offers loan guarantees, investments, and other financial products to Indigenous groups engaging in resource development, infrastructure, and other economic opportunities. 
  • Eligibility: Indigenous groups in Alberta. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Natural resources, agriculture, telecommunications, transportation, tourism projects. 
  • Due date: Ongoing
  • Brief description: Helps Indigenous communities’ economic development through capital investment in locally-owned businesses. 
  • Eligibility: Indigenous communities or corporate entities owned by Indigenous communities in Alberta. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Capital costs for community-owned business initiatives. 
  • Due date: May 15, 2025
  • Brief description: Supports Indigenous involvement in Alberta’s renewable energy sector through grants for feasibility studies, capacity building, or equity investment in renewable energy projects. 
  • Eligibility: Indigenous communities and organizations in Alberta. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Feasibility studies, capacity building, equity investment in renewable energy projects.

  • Brief description: Provides equity assistance for the start-up or expansion of small businesses for Status individuals. 
  • Eligibility: Status individuals in Alberta.

  • Brief description: Provides access to capital and business opportunities to Indigenous entrepreneurs and business owners in Canada in areas like cleantech, Greentech, indigenous procurement, capacity building. 
  • Eligibility: Indigenous individuals. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Institutional development, including training and development, and business supports to business development organizations, business advisory services and training, commercial ventures, including business innovation and growth, market development, business development and advocacy activities

  • Brief description:  Supports Indigenous women entrepreneurs by helping them start and grow their businesses through loans of up to $50,000. 
  • Eligibility: Indigenous women entrepreneurs in Canada who are starting or expanding their businesses. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Projects related to business startup, expansion, technology adoption, and market development. 
  • Due date: Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
  • Agency: Government of Canada 
  • Brief description:  Support projects that help Indigenous Peoples and other underrepresented and marginalized groups in Canadian agriculture to fully participate in the sector by addressing key issues and barriers. 
  • Eligibility: Canadian organizations working in the agriculture and agri-food sector that engage, train, and empower underrepresented and marginalized groups such as Indigenous Peoples, women, youth, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, and official language minority communities. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Projects that promote the benefits of a career in agriculture and enhance the public’s perception of the sector. 
  • Due date: May 30, 2025, but the program ends on March 31, 2028. 
  • Agency:  Government of Alberta 
  • Brief description: The Workforce Partnerships Grants program funds projects to support labour market adjustment strategies and workforce development in Alberta. 
  • Eligibility: Open to businesses, non-profits, industry associations, employer and employee organizations, local planning groups, economic development organizations, community action groups, Indigenous groups, municipalities, and charitable organizations. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Projects that develop labour market strategies, analyze trends, create strategic plans, promote labour market needs, share HR best practices, and pilot workforce development tools. 
  • Due date: Ongoing 
  • Brief description: Provides up to $1,000 to BIPOC entrepreneurs, helping them overcome barriers and grow their businesses.  
  • Eligibility: BIPOC entrepreneurs. 
  • Types of projects: Priority is given to projects that align with specific grant priorities, such as promoting equity, and supporting cultural diversity. 
  • Due date: September 2025  
  • Agency: Government of Canada 
  • Brief description:  Provides funding up to $100,000 for cultural or economic projects. 
  • Eligibility: Indigenous individuals. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Indigenous-led initiatives that enhance, protect, or revitalize Indigenous languages, cultures, and arts, or capacity and opportunity development projects that improve economic outcomes for communities. 
  • Due date: September 15, 2025 
  • Agency: Government of Alberta 
  • Brief description:  Provides $150,000 to a maximum of $750,000 to support capital costs related to Indigenous community-own development projects.  
  • Eligibility: Indigenous communities in Alberta or corporate entities owned by Indigenous communities located in Alberta. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Begin or expand Indigenous community-owned businesses; create spin-off business opportunities for Indigenous Peoples and communities; increase the number of employment opportunities for Indigenous Peoples; create or increase local revenue streams for Indigenous communities. 
  • Due date: October 15, 2025 
  • Agency: Government of Alberta 
  • Brief description:  Provides grant funding to Indigenous communities and organizations to deliver group-training projects designed in partnership with employers and other partners. 
  • Eligibility: First Nations on or off reserve, Tribal or regional organizations; Métis on or off Settlements, Métis representative groups; other Indigenous organizations and employers. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Projects are custom designed based on participant and industry needs and must include formal training, for example, occupational training. 
  • Due date: Ongoing 
  • Agency: Government of Canada 
  • Brief description: Supports Indigenous communities and businesses in the Prairies by advancing economic development through funding and assistance. The goal is to create jobs, develop skills, increase revenue, and bring economic benefits to Indigenous communities. 
  • Eligibility: Indigenous-led businesses, not-for-profits, and Indigenous communities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. 
  • Types of projects accepted: Projects that help grow or develop businesses, increase competitiveness, build service offerings for Indigenous businesses and entrepreneurs, and support workforce development and business support services. 
  • Due date: Proposals are accepted on an ongoing basis. 
  • Agency: Government of Canada 
  • Brief description:  Offers non-repayable contributions, similar to grants, up to a maximum of $500,000 per recipient, per year for projects that support Indigenous entrepreneurship. 
  • Eligibility: First Nation and Inuit communities, Indigenous-owned organizations and associations (as long as they are not charitable or religious), labour organizations, universities, colleges, and other learning institutions 
  • Types of projects accepted: Institutional development, including training and development, and business supports to business development organizations; business advisory services and training; commercial ventures, including business innovation and growth; market development; business development and advocacy activities.

  • Agency: Métis Government 
  • Brief description: Provides up to $ 99,999 to help Métis entrepreneurs start, expand, or modernize their business. 
  • Eligibility: Métis entrepreneurs throughout Alberta.
