Calgary, October 15, 2021 – The Calgary Chamber was recently made aware of an individual calling businesses in the Calgary area, claiming to be a Chamber employee. The concerns are similar to reports of fraudulent calls from 2010, where the caller inquired about the company’s moving plans and offered to provide information on available commercial properties. The situation has been reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
We encourage all individuals and businesses to be vigilant when sharing information.
Here are a few steps you can take to protect your information and verify a caller’s identity:
- The Calgary Chamber will not contact you to inquire about your office moving plans.
- Emails from the Calgary Chamber will always end in @calgary-chamber.papercrane.ca.
- Recipients of calls or emails can verify a callers identity by requesting to receive an email from the Calgary Chamber.
- When providing payment information over the phone, ask the caller to send you a link for secure online payment, or alternatively, ask to receive an invoice by email first. These emails will come from membership@calgary-chamber.papercrane.ca.
- Ask the caller to verify your Chamber account number. If you are a Chamber Insurance plan member, ask the caller to verify your insurance plan number.
- If you are unsure the call is from a legitimate source, call the Chamber back directly on our main office line: 403-750-0400.
- Ensure your employees are aware of the potential for fraud and share information on what to do if they receive a questionable call.
Protecting your privacy and personal information is our priority. If you think you have been the victim of a fraudulent call, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre immediately.
