Calgary, May 30, 2023 – On behalf of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the Calgary business community, we extend our sincere congratulations to Premier Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party of Alberta on their success in the 2023 Alberta Provincial Election. The party’s achievement in forming government reflects the dedication and hard work of candidates, campaign teams and supporters throughout the province.
“As the champion for Calgary businesses, the Calgary Chamber stands ready to work with the government as they strive to support Alberta's economic growth and implement policies that strengthen Calgary's business community,” says Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “Working collaboratively, we can build a prosperous future for our city and province, ensuring Alberta remains a magnet for capital, opportunity and talent.”
As our province’s economic interests are placed at the forefront, we encourage Premier Smith to advance the business-friendly policies and investments committed to during the campaign, including:
- Supporting Albertans and Alberta businesses with rising costs by maintaining the eight per cent corporate tax rate, decreasing personal income taxes and extending affordability supports such as the Fuel Tax Relief.
- Addressing Alberta’s labour shortage by providing support for students and promoting in-demand career pathways such as those in healthcare, childcare and skilled trades and reinvesting in education.
- Fostering vibrant downtowns through a focus on public safety and community well-being that includes expanded mental health and addictions supports and support for growing the post-secondary presence in the downtown core.
- Supporting a diverse and equal opportunity economy by increasing support for the Alberta Petrochemical Incentive Program, expanding the Alberta Indigenous Opportunity Corporation and creating meaningful investment tax credits for initiatives such as carbon capture and storage.
- Strengthening Alberta’s tourism industry through the implementation of the proposed Tourism Plan and contributions to the development of Calgary’s Event Centre and Culture + Entertainment District.
Recognizing our shared objective of supporting Alberta businesses, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce is eager to work with the new government on the development and implementation of policies that support the continued growth and prosperity of our business community, ensuring Alberta remains synonymous with economic growth and opportunity.
